Cultural Olympiad Update June 2010

1. North West News

Six projects have been awarded the Inspire Mark, making them part of the Cultural Olympiad. Three Lakes Alive projects: We Built This City, Into the Woods and The Mintfest International Summer School, and three projects for Open Weekend, Mechanical Games from Abandon Normal Devices, Water’s Edge from High Tide and Bicycle Ballet from Urban Moves Festival.

The Cultural Olympiad programme in the North West is being nominated for and winning prestigious national and international awards. One of the centrepieces produced by Abandon Normal Devices festival Primitive, provided creator, Apichatpong Weerasethakul, with early research into his resulting film, Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives. The film went on to win the globally prestigious Palme d’Or at Cannes Film Festival, a testament to the bold programming risks taken by Abandon Normal Devices. Lakes Alive has reached the semi finals of the National Lottery Awards for the UK’s Best Art Project. It is the only North West project and UK Street Arts project to be nominated for this category. DaDa received a V Inspired volunteering award as one of the UK’s inspire projects to support engagement of deaf and disabled young people in volunteering. This year’s festival will offer a Bronze Arts Award accreditation to young Disabled/Deaf volunteers aged 16-25 years old.

The third programme in WE PLAY which is now called Blaze (formerly New Cultural Journeys) launched on 27th May 2010 in Preston. Led by the young producers from Lancashire and engaging 275 people from across the region, Blaze announced its 2010 programme of art/sport commissions. Visit www.blazeonline.org.uk for full details

London 2012 Mascots were launched to the rest of the world on 19th May in Bolton and in Much Wenlock. The Olympic mascot is Wenlock, and Paralympic mascot, Mandeville. London may be the host city for the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games but it turns out that the official mascots were born further north. The Mascots were created from the last drops of steel left over from the construction of the final support beam for the Olympic Stadium supplied by Bolton steel firm Watson Steel Structures.

World leading British directors and producers appointed to London 2012 Ceremonies Team. 3 Mills Studios, East London centre for creative industries, is the London 2012 Ceremonies Production Centre. and a Consortium of event professionals is formed to provide production services. Four leading UK creatives will form a team of Executive Producers who will oversee the Opening and Closing Ceremonies of the London 2012 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games. The team will be Stephen Daldry, Executive Producer, Creative, Mark Fisher, Executive Producer, Design, Hamish Hamilton, Executive Producer, Broadcast and Catherine Ugwu, Executive Producer, Production. Danny Boyle, Oscar winning British filmmaker and producer, will be the Artistic Director for the London 2012 Olympic Games Opening Ceremony. An Artistic Director for the Olympic Closing Ceremony and one for the Paralympic Opening and Closing Ceremonies will be appointed later this year.

2. Current Opportunities

Commissions for the Olympic Park - The Olympic Delivery Authority is inviting experienced arts organisations or curator/producers to programme, manage and deliver a number of exciting, innovative and high quality, artist-led, temporary commissions and participatory projects focused around the edges of the Olympic Park site from August 2010 to December 2011. Film Nation: Shorts – goes live in June 2010 and is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for the next generation of young film makers. The project gives 11-25 year olds the chance to make films celebrating the values of the Olympic and Paralympic Games. The best work will be screened at the iconic venues during the London 2012 Games to an audience of millions.

London 2012 Open Weekend – 23rd – 25th July 2010 - Be part of Open Weekend and join hundreds of organisations from across the UK celebrating the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Discovering Places launch as part of Open Weekend - You can be involved in the Discovering Places launch as they start the campaign to inspire the UK to discover their local environment – with all its hidden places, extraordinary spaces and the stories they have to tell. You can be part of Discovering Places if your activity or event is free at the point of access; is actively engaged in either natural, built or historic environments and meets the Open Weekend “challenge” theme: To register your activity and or event you will need to fill out the Open Weekend registration form and tick the Discovering Places box on the form.

Bandstand Marathon 2010 – 26th September 2010 - Following on from its huge success last year, Bandstand Marathon is taking place again in the South West. They have joined forces with the Samaritans and are now taking bookings for the Bandstand Marathon 2010 on 26th September at 2pm. For 2010 they are aiming for 200 concerts in 2010 across the UK. There is a minimum cost of £400 per concert and SuperAct organise and programme the event for you. V Inspired: London 2012 inspire mark projects were invited to bid for a V Inspired volunteering award. DaDa in the north west received an award to support engagement of deaf and disabled young people in volunteering. This year’s festival will offer a Bronze Arts Award accreditation to young Disabled/Deaf volunteers aged 16-25 years old.

Approximately 65 newly created part-time opportunities will be developed in response to young people’s interest in volunteering. The majority of part time volunteer opportunities will consist of Researchers, Advocates, Decision makers, Leaders, flash mob participants, festival promoters, ambassadors, exhibition invigilators, information assistants, tour guides and Technicians.

This year’s festival will offer a Bronze Arts Award accreditation to young Disabled/Deaf volunteers aged 16-25 years old.

Opportunities leading up to the festival will include:

  • Attending and leading the first Volunteer Discussion Forum group meeting.
  • Participating in and leading on the recruitment and interviews of volunteers. Volunteer Discussion Forum group members will also participate in the recruitment of the project Assistant/Volunteer Supervisor, and all other personnel where appropriate.
  • Designing posters, T-shirts and flyers for volunteer recruitment.
  • Developing the volunteer recruitment and festival marketing strategies with DaDa’s Marketing Officer.
  • Participating in the design and development of volunteer opportunities as part of the festival’s marketing strategy in relation to viral marketing campaigns, flash mob activities and festival promotion.

Opportunities during the festival will include:

  • Marketing Assistant(s) – to assist DaDa’s Marketing Officer with website/blog maintenance and support for the festival and V Inspired volunteering programme.
     
  • Film documentary Team Assistant(s) – assisting with the documentation of the festival and V Inspired volunteering programme.
     
  • DaDa Office Administration Assistant – assisting DaDa staff team with general day-to-day office administration support for the DaDa Office and festival enquiries.
     
  • Young People’s Arts Officer Assistant – assisting DaDa’s Young People’s Arts Officer with preparations for the Young DaDaFest event on 1st December.
     
  • DaDaLive Volunteering opportunities – volunteering for the DaDaLive project during the festival, a skills development programme for young Disabled/Deaf people in progressive live art performance practice.
     
  • DaDaFest Project Manager Assistant(s) – assisting the DaDaFest Project Manager with the delivery of the festival.
     
  • Volunteer Supervisor Assistants - assisting the Volunteer Supervisor with the coordination of volunteers at festival events.
     
  • Technical Manager Assistants – assisting the technical manager with the production side of the festival.
     
  • DaDa Ambassadors - Ambassadors will function as advocates for the festival, promoting various events to their peers and community groups. They will also share volunteer experiences with other volunteers from similar projects, in particular peer mentoring with volunteers from ‘Open City’, a volunteer project being developed by Liverpool Arts Regeneration Consortium, (LARC).
     
  • Exhibition Invigilators - Volunteers are the public face of Dada and are expected to welcome visitors to the exhibits and monitor security at sites of work
     
  • Information Assistants - Volunteers will act as a point of contact between Dada and visitors in exhibition venues offering a knowledge and understanding of Dada and an enthusiasm for contemporary art. Volunteers will be expected to engage in conversation with visitors offering interpretations of the work and answering questions.
     
  • Event Support Assistants - Volunteers will provide customer friendly assistance in the organisation of events for V.I.P.s, funders and visitors.
     
  • Artist Support Assistants - Volunteers may have the opportunity to provide support and hospitality to artists during their stay in the city, in return for mentoring by artists where appropriate as part of the incentive/reward scheme.

Opportunities after the festival will include:

Skilled professional activities such as project leadership, management and fundraising, will play a key role in enabling volunteers to lead and facilitate work for a new intake of young Disabled/Deaf volunteers for next years festival, ensuring the sustainability of the programme beyond 2011.

To maintain the Volunteering programmes sustainability a fund raising sub group will be developed and maintained to raise funds to support future volunteer training, volunteer supervisory staff, accreditations/awards training and accreditation processing costs.
