Launch of Renaissance major grant programme and Publication of Culture, knowledge and understanding: great museums and libraries for everyone

20 September 2011

Dear Colleague,

As many of you will know, last week Arts Council England announced the launch of the Renaissance major grants programme and published Culture, knowledge and understanding: great museums and libraries for everyone. This document sets out how we will place museums and libraries firmly with the arts at the heart of our organisation, its work and its vision for the future.

These announcements are important steps towards the Arts Council assuming key responsibilities formerly held by the Museums, Libraries and Archives Council (MLA) from the 1st October 2011. Since agreeing to take on these functions, we have been working towards providing a fully integrated cultural offer that inspires more people to get involved with the arts, museums and libraries.

The Renaissance major grant programme uses a similar open application process to the Arts Council National Portfolio programme. This opens up the programme to organisations that are not currently funded.

Applications opened on 13 September, and close on 2 November. Funding decisions will be announced in January 2012.The funding for the major grants programme is £20 million and grant awards will range from £500 - £2million for three years between 2012 and 2015. Full details of the criteria for Renaissance major grants and the application process can be found here

Arts Council England intends Renaissance to help museums to fulfil their aims and ambitions, as they benefit directly or indirectly from great leadership, innovation and excellence in museums across the country.

In the current financial climate we need to be pragmatic about what we can do with the more limited resources available, a 15 per cent reduction in the Renaissance budget for 2012-15, but we are determined to stay focused on our long-term ambitions.

We have revisited our strategic goals to make sure they reflect the aims and ambitions of all the organisations we support. Culture, knowledge and understanding: great museums and libraries for everyone articulates how Arts Council England plans to champion, develop and invest in museums and libraries, and how they in turn can contribute to our strategic goals - offering exciting and imaginative experiences to as many people as possible and developing a strong and sustainable cultural sector.

We’ll also be playing a focused role in supporting and developing libraries, through initiatives like the Future Libraries programme and I look forward to working with arts organisations, museums and libraries across the country to really bring the cultural offer together for the benefit of audiences

We will launch an informal consultation on the longer term focus beyond 2015 in the late autumn to ensure a wide range of views are heard about how best to reflect the long-term ambitions of all the sectors that the Arts Council now represents.

These new responsibilities present us with really exciting opportunities, and we are determined to create the conditions for the arts, museums and libraries to thrive.

Here in the North West office we’ve appointed Eve Pattinson as Relationship Manager for Museums and Nathan Lee as Relationship Manager for Libraries. Both Eve and Nathan come to us with a wealth of experience from MLA and will be making contact with colleagues in museums and libraries following their induction. Within the North West office senior level responsibility for Museums and Renaissance sits with Jane Beardsworth, Senior Manager, Corporate Planning, and for Libraries with Ian Tabbron, Senior Manager, Funding Programmes. A number of other staff also have experience of working with both the museum and library sectors. I am confident that we have a strong team in place as we assume our new responsibilities at the beginning of October. In advance of Eve and Nathan taking up their posts and working externally, if you have any queries please contact Ian and Jane who will be able to help.

Young correspondents will be everywhere at imperial war museum north this summer  all activities and exhibitions are free - donations welcome. - www.iwm.org.uk/north

Breaking news for families: everyone is a reporter this summer at Imperial War Museum North. Sharpen your pencils and take out your notepads. Budding journalists of all ages are being given a unique opportunity to discover the art of reporting.

Special two day master classes for teenagers, fun activities for younger children and new adult tours are all free and timed to coincide with the critically acclaimed new exhibition War Correspondent: reporting under fire since 1914.

Families can learn how to get the big scoop. From 1-4pm every day of the school summer holidays there will be free, drop in craft activities. This includes a series of Young Correspondent sessions. Put pen to paper and compose your own newspaper front page. Report the story of one of our animal heroes or iconic large objects. Decorate your own journalist jotter for those all important notes and observations.

Enjoy What A Performance shows for families every Wednesday and Saturday afternoon throughout the summer, many of which bring to life the tale of a reporter during wartime. Hear the dramatic, family friendly story of a fictional journalist who worked under fire to bring the news home.

For young adults, there is something extra special. Could you be country's next star reporter like John Simpson or Kate Adie? Fancy being a young correspondent? Could you create a compelling report to tell the story of a war veteran?

If so, act fast and sign up for one of our special Young Correspondent Master Classes, delivered in partnership with BBC 21st Century Classroom. This is a unique opportunity to use the new BBC Learning Studio across from the Museum at MediaCityUK, develop journalism skills and engage with the Museum's themes and Collections.

Meet real eyewitnesses to conflict and tell the story of someone whose life has been shaped by war. Create your own films which will screened on the BBC 21CC website. Book early; these two day master classes are free and places are limited. Visit www.iwm.org.uk/north and email learningnorth@iwm.org.uk  to book or find out more.

All visitors can also join a 20 minute walk and talk exploring the Museum's Collections on selected Sundays. Hear about the changing nature of war reporting and explore a number of personal stories in our collections from the First World War to the present day. Visit www.iwm.org.uk/north for more information on all events.

War Correspondent: reporting under fire since 1914 is the UK's first major exhibition about British war correspondents, revealing the people behind the news - with many unique, historic items from household name reporters on display for the first time. See the bullet that deflected into Kate Adie's leg in the conflict in Lebanon and a burqa worn by John Simpson to secretly enter Afghanistan in 2001, alongside new and archive footage. Entry is free.

Jim Forrester, Director of Imperial War Museum North, said: 'With MediaCityUK opening here on The Quays this year, Imperial War Museum North have teamed up with the BBC to create a very special summer of family events. There's something for everyone, from fun activities for younger children to a remarkable chance for young adults to become Young Correspondents.'
