Celebrate International Women's Day - 8th March 2011

Stretford Leisure Centre between 9.30am and 4pm.

International Women's Day (8 March) is a global day celebrating the economic, political and social achievements of women past, present and future. In some places like China, Russia, Vietnam and Bulgaria, International Women's Day is a national holiday.

Suffragettes campaigned for women's right to vote. The word 'Suffragette' is derived from the word "suffrage" meaning the right to vote. International Women's Day honours the work of the Suffragettes, celebrates women's success, and reminds us of inequities still to be redressed.

The first International Women's Day event was run in 1911.

2011 is the Global Centenary Year... Since then organisations, governments and women's groups around the world choose different themes each year that reflect global and local gender issues.

The event is run between the Leisure Trust and Trafford Council with help of Sport Trafford. There will be events and stalls in the sports Hall, giving women information on education, health, wellbeing and housing etc There will be women's only events on the day such as health walks, women's only gym, women's only swim and fitness testing including nutritional talks.
